An Open Studio Hour Led by an Art Therapist
The Making Space is a creative hour for college students looking for a supportive space to explore creative ideas, express themselves, and honor their own creative capacity with other.
Each session is guided by a registered art therapist. We open with a short mindfulness practice, then move into open studio time, where participants explore their creative expression at their own pace, in their own way. This is time set aside for a new project to begin, for a creative itch to be followed, or for gentle self-soothing through unpressured art making.
Feel free to bring something you're already working on. And if you don't know what you'd like to create, that's no problem at all — our art therapist offers supportive prompts and shares options to collaborate with you in your creative discovery and expression.
This group is open to adults 18 and over. No art experience is needed! The space is warm, unhurried, and built around the process rather than the product.

Why an Open Studio?
The process of physically creating invites a different kind of attention. Working with our hands can settle the nervous system, give shape to feelings that have been hard to name, and open a way toward what hasn't yet found words.
Creating in the company of others adds something further. You might work quietly on your own piece for the full hour, or find yourself responding to what someone else is exploring — both belong in an open studio. A semester can leave little room for anything that isn't due, and a set hour with a group already gathered makes a creative practice easier to keep. This hour is built to make that gentle awareness and flow of expression easy to return to.
What to Expect
Each session includes:
A short mindfulness practice to arrive and settle
Open studio time — create at your own pace, in your own way, on your own project
Supportive prompts and options, offered whenever you'd like a starting point
Gentle facilitation and space for reflection or conversation
Respect for autonomy — sharing is always an invitation, never a requirement
No prior art experience is needed.
Who Is This For?
This group is ideal for college students 18 and over who:
Want an hour set aside for creative expression in the middle of a full week
Are returning to a creative practice that school hasn’t left room for
Would rather create in the company of others
May benefit from the therapeutic nature of an open studio held by an art therapist — a space where the making is met with care
Are curious about mindfulness and creativity as a way to settle and reconnect
Want a supportive space to explore, with no expectation of what comes out of it
If you’re unsure whether the group is the right fit, we welcome a conversation to explore more.
Led by an Art Therapist
The Making Space is an open studio group, not an art therapy group and not an art class. It's a creative space held by a registered art therapist — someone trained to facilitate a space safe enough to explore, to offer a starting point when one would help, and to hold the space with care when something tender surfaces in the making.
The benefit is a therapeutic quality to the space, and a creative practice you can build and keep.
This is a wellness offering rather than psychotherapy. There is no diagnosis, no treatment plan, and no billing to insurance. If individual therapy is what you're looking for, we would be glad to help you with that separately.
About the Facilitator:
Kristina MacCaughan, LCMHC, ATR, is a licensed clinical mental health counselor and registered art therapist at Radiant Mind Wellness. Creative expression is central to how she works — making something gives shape to what hasn't found words yet. She is also near completion of a 500-hour Clinical Yoga Certification, which informs the mindfulness and somatic-based attention she brings to this hour. She holds creative space for adults with warmth, attentiveness, and gentle support.
Location
The Making Space meets online by secure video, open to participants located anywhere in Utah — including those outside the Salt Lake area without access to a group like this nearby. Joining from home means no commute and no parking. Set up at your own space, with your materials.
Radiant Mind Wellness is based in Murray, Utah.
